St Andrews saints 11 - 3 Edinburgh Gentlemen.
St Andrews Saints unbeaten run continues as they celebrate another comfortable win, this time over the Edinburgh Gentlemen. In a torrential downpour both teams locked horns in what was anticipated as one of the biggest matches of the year. While the skill on show lived up to the expectancy, the score line did not keep the spectators on the edge of their seats.
Edinburgh made the long journey up to Aberdeen knowing that they were facing a team that is capable of dominating at both ends of the field. The Gents did a stellar job of halting Hugo Francis and Chris Andrews, who both had 9 goal games against the Granite City Gladiators in their last match, allowing them only one goal apiece. However, The Saints roster has some serious depth and Edinburgh's focus on Andrews and Francis allowed others to step up and produce their goals. One such player was Xandy Walsh who was able to get his name on the score sheet for the first time this season before continuing to add 3 more to his tally during the course of the game. Walsh was complimented by Max Skotheim who put up an impressive two goals and two assists.
The Gentlemen who usually function as a well disciplined unit seemed to struggle without their 3 starting defenders. Their keeper Devin Oliver had another stand out performance making point blank saves with what looked like ease. Edinburgh kept themselves in the match by remaining composed in attack and allowing their usual threats Bret Retallick and Greg Scott to secure them much needed goals. They would have managed more had it not been for the quick reflexes of the Saints keeper, Andrew Shen.
The match finished 11-3 to St Andrews who go into their next fixture with the Glasgow Stealth with a +28 goal difference after 2 games. Currently, there is very little in the way of weaknesses in the Saints side, as their Captain Andrew Shen comments "Only two games have gone, but in form like this, many will doubt whether there is any team in the league that can match the Saints title credentials". Is there a team that can challenge them? Only time will tell. In the mean time it is worth remembering that the strongest team doesn't always win.
This defeat will not be taken too harshly by the Capital natives, as we have not seen all that the team has to offer. No doubt Edinburgh will come back from the break with a performance we all know their roster is capable of delivering. They will need to, as they face a Gladiator side who will be looking to revenge their narrow 6-7 defeat on 2nd November at the hands of the Glasgow Stealth.
